Abstract

Politeness is a language strategy involving the aspect of linguistics so that the characteristics of morality, manners, courtesy and custom that are upheld in the society can be followed by each member. This study aims to identify gender factors that influence the use of linguistic politeness by the Prophet Muhammad SAW through the analysis of selected retrieved discourse texts. The data of this study is the text of the conversation involving the SAW with his community. Text analysis is done using the Model Grid SPEAKING approach, introduced by Dell Hymes (1986), which focuses on an extensive analysis of social and cultural contexts. The analysis explained the taboo elements contained in the conversation and the gender factor that influenced the politeness style of Rasulullah SAW. The findings are significant to guide the present Islamic society in cultivating values of politeness and courtesy in the language.
