Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study examines burnout and organizational commitment among hospital nurses. A total of 122 nurses from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital's various ranks were selected to answer a questionnaire consisting of Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation, independent sample t-test and ANOVA in SPSS. Results showed a significant relationship between the three aspects of burnout and emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement with organizational commitment among nurses in Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Results also showed that there is a difference of burnout, emotional exhaustion and organizational commitment based on the length of service. In addition, the results show there is a difference between emotional exhaustion and depersonalization among nurses based on ethnicity. However, the results showed no significant differences in burnout as well as three aspects according to marital status, place of work and working hours. Results also showed that there were no differences in organizational commitment based on marital status, race, place of work and working hours. The implications of the study are also discussed.

ABSTRAK

Kajian ini melihat burnout dan komitmen terhadap organisasi di kalangan jururawat hospital. Seramai 122 orang jururawat dari Hospital Queen Elizabeth yang pelbagai pangkat telah dipilih untuk menjawab soal selidik yang terdiri daripada Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) dan Organizational Commitment Questionaire (OCQ). Data dianalisis menggunakan korelasi Pearson, Ujian-t sampel bebas dan ANOVA sehala menggunakan program SPSS.  Keputusan mendapati terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara burnout dan tiga aspeknya iaitu keletihan emosi, depersonalisasi dan pencapaian peribadi dengan komitmen terhadap organisasi dalam kalangan jururawat Hospital Queen Elizabeth. Keputusan juga menunjukkan terdapat perbezaan burnout, keletihan emosi dan komitmen terhadap organisasi mengikut tempoh perkhidmatan.  Di samping itu, keputusan  menunjukkan terdapat perbezaan antara keletihan emosi dan depersonalisasi dalam kalangan jururawat mengikut bangsa. Sebaliknya, keputusan mendapati tidak terdapat perbezaan burnout dan tiga aspeknya mengikut status perkahwinan, tempat bertugas dan waktu bertugas. Keputusan juga mendapati tidak terdapat perbezaan komitmen terhadap organisasi mengikut status perkahwinan, bangsa, tempat bertugas dan waktu bertugas. Implikasi kajian turut dibincangkan.
