Abstract

ABSTRACT

This article examines the level of work stress among secondary school teachers. In addition, the study focussed on the position of the five main factors that influence job stress experienced by teachers. Furthermore, this study examined the role of demographic towards teachers’ pressure. A total of 40 teachers from two secondary schools (Grades A and B) in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan had been selected as sample for the study. The researchers applied the Teacher Stress Inventory (Boyle et al., 1995) as an instrument to measure the level of teachers' work pressure whereas in measuring the position of the factors that affect the working pressure of teachers, the researchers used a Teacher Stress Self Report (Dunham, 1992). The findings showed that 57.2% of teachers experienced moderate job stress level, 37.2% had low levels of job stress, while only 4.7% of teachers were experiencing high levels of work stress. The study showed that students’ misconduct is the most significant factor from five main factors that lead to stress among teachers. The researchers suggested school administration could impose stricter disciplinary policy measures, equip basic facilities for teaching and learning, conduct appropriate duties distribution and be sensitive to teachers’ relationships and organize work stress management training courses among teachers.
