Abstract

ABSTRACT

Teaching and learning Mathematics and Science subjects require skills and effective teaching strategies in order to attain effective education.  To achieve this mission, teachers must have a high level of achievement in the use of English Language for the realization of learning using the said language for both these subjects. The Ministry of Education is implementing various training programs to help teachers increase their command of the English Language. Although the program which was designed promises a good outcome, it is early yet to see its effectiveness especially in view of the anxiety of teachers themselves towards teaching using English as the medium of instruction for both these subjects. This study aims to determine the level of anxiety amongst Science and Mathematics teachers in the first year national primary schools in the context of teaching the said subjects in English. The data collection was carried out by using the questionnaire method based on the English Language Anxiety Scale (ELAS) (Horwitz, et.al., 1986) involving 74 Mathematics and Science teachers from 18 national schools in the region of Johor Bahru. The findings of this study revealed that the level of anxiety of these Mathematics and Science teachers were at a moderate level. The findings also indicated that the level of anxiety for three of the anxiety sub-scales based on demographic factors such as gender, marital status, teaching experience and age were at a moderate level.

Pengajaran dan pembelajaran subjek Matematik dan Sains dalam bahasa Inggeris memerlukan kemahiran dan strategi pengajaran berkesan menghasilkan pendidikan yang sempurna. Untuk mencapai misi ini, guru mestilah mempunyai tahap pencapaian yang tinggi dalam penggunaan bahasa Inggeris bagi merealisasikan pembelajaran menggunakan bahasa tersebut dalam kedua-dua subjek ini. Kementerian Pelajaran telah dan sedang melaksanakan pelbagai program latihan untuk membantu guru-guru untuk meningkatkan penguasaan bahasa Inggeris. Walaupun program yang dirangka menjanjikan satu pencapaian yang baik, keberkesanannya masih terlalu awal untuk dilihat terutama dari aspek kebimbangan guru itu sendiri terhadap pengajaran menggunakan bahasa Inggeris sebagai bahasa pengantar di dalam kedua-dua subjek tersebut.  Kajian ini bertujuan mengenalpasti tahap kebimbangan di kalangan guru Matematik dan Sains sekolah rendah kebangsaan Tahun Satu terhadap pengajaran subjek tersebut di dalam bahasa Inggeris. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan kaedah soal selidik English Language Anxiety Scale (ELAS) (Horwitz, et.al., 1986) yang melibatkan 75 orang guru Matematik dan Sains dari 18 buah sekolah kebangsaan di sekitar Johor Bahru. Dapatan kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa tahap kebimbangan guru matematik dan sains adalah pada tahap sederhana.  Dapatan kajian juga menunjukkan bahawa tahap kebimbangan terhadap tiga sub-skala kebimbangan berdasarkan faktor demografi seperti jantina, status perkahwinan, pengalaman mengajar dan umur adalah pada tahap sederhana.
